YouTube Tag Extractor
The ViralMint YouTube Tag Extractor is a free tool that pulls the tags and keywords from any public YouTube video. Paste a video link and you get the uploader's exact tag list, the tag count, and the total character count against YouTube's 500-character limit — so you can see both what a ranking video targeted and how much of the tag box it used. No sign-up, no installation.
This video has no tags. That is a real finding, not an error — many large channels and most Shorts leave the tag box empty.
Why Extract YouTube Tags?
When a video in your niche ranks or goes viral, the useful question is which searches it was actually written for. Tags are the one part of a competitor's metadata strategy that is explicit — the title and thumbnail are written for humans, but the tag box is written for the algorithm. Pull the tags from the three or four videos already ranking for your topic and the overlap between them is your keyword shortlist.
Where these tags come from
Older guides tell you to open the page source and search for a keywords meta tag.
That stopped working years ago — YouTube no longer puts tags in the watch page's HTML. They are
still public through YouTube's official Data API, and that is what this tool reads: one lookup per
video, cached, with no login on either end. If the API says a video has no tags, it has no tags.
The 500-character limit is the number that matters
YouTube caps the tag box at 500 characters in total, and the commas between tags count. That is why this tool shows the character count next to the tag count: fifteen short tags and five long phrases can consume exactly the same budget. If a competitor is sitting at 480 characters, they have deliberately filled it; if they are at 60, tags are not what is ranking that video.
What to do with the list
- Copy the overlap, not the list. A tag that appears on every ranking video describes the topic; one that appears on a single video is usually that channel's own branding.
- Keep the misspellings. They are the one job tags still do well, and they cost you nothing in the title.
- Then go make the video. Tags won't rank a video whose hook doesn't hold — that's what the rest of ViralMint is for.
Tags describe the topic; the title wins the click. Pair the list with the YouTube Title Generator, and use the trending video finder to decide which competitors' tags are worth copying in the first place.
